What makes a breakout group work
- Mix departments deliberately. People sit with their team every day; the offsite is the one chance to cross-pollinate.
- Six to eight people is the sweet spot. Below five, one quiet person can sink it. Above nine, someone stops talking entirely.
- Split the org chart. A manager and their direct report in the same small group changes what the report says.
- Spread the talkers. Put one natural facilitator in each group rather than three in one.
- Rotate between sessions — new groups for the afternoon means everyone meets twice as many colleagues.
